IPAST Applications Now Open!

Terrell A. Morgan, Emeritus Professor of Hispanic Linguistics
The Ohio State University

The Center for Latin American Studies and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The Ohio State University are excited to announce Intensive Portuguese Abroad for Spanish Teachers (IPAST), a program in Portuguese language and culture consisting of online learning, followed by a three-week exchange experience in Curitiba, in southern Brazil. Live the language and culture and come home speaking Portuguese!

The program is intended primarily for Spanish teachers. Application is open, however, to teachers and administrators, and graduate students from Spanish, Education, and other disciplines who have at least an intermediate knowledge of Spanish and an interest in learning Portuguese. Participants do not need to be currently enrolled at Ohio State to apply.

The program will include remote Portuguese language learning from April 21-June 13, 2025, followed by an exchange experience in Curitiba, Brazil from June 23-July 11, 2025. It will take place at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). Participants receive 3 graduate credits/CEUs upon completion of the program.

During their stay in Brazil, participants will take part-time Portuguese language classes at CELIN (the university language center) and will be invited to join a free, optional language teacher education course offered by the university project Teachers across Borders, also responsible for extra cultural activities and homestay responsibilities.

Enrollment will be limited to a maximum of 16 participants. Priority will be given to classroom teachers and graduate students who demonstrate a need for compact summer offerings of this nature. However, qualified applicants from any institution are welcome. You do not need to be a Spanish teacher to apply.

The total cost of the program is $2,200 USD, which includes the application fee, three (semester) hours of Ohio State graduate tuition; course materials; and airport pickup and drop-off at the international airport in Curitiba. The costs of round-trip air fare, lodging, standard medical insurance and supplemental travel health insurance, optional excursions, and personal expenditures will be additional.

The non-refundable application fee ($200) is paid to the Center for Latin American Studies. The course cost ($2,000) is paid directly to the Fundação da Universidade Federal do Paraná (FUNPAR) and may be paid in up to three installments provided that full payment is received before the end of the course.
