In a world that is becoming more diverse and language is being used to understand and communicate with others, OFLA must ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are at the core of everything we do. To help create an inclusive space where members and language students feel supported, OFLA has committed to adopting a formal DEI statement.
Why does a DEI statement matter?
A DEI statement is not just a line of text on a website but a pledge to foster an inclusive space. As members of OFLA and language educators, we are dedicated to promoting intercultural understanding and communication among our students and those in our community. It is necessary that we have a statement that encompasses our association’s core values.
Language learners, teachers, and advocates come from different backgrounds, sexual orientations, and socio-economic statuses. By supporting representation of all voices and experiences, we can better reflect and celebrate diversity.
Through the adoption of a DEI statement, OFLA is better suited to help address and break down systematic barriers that prevent certain groups from reaching. The statement will serve as a guiding principle, reinforcing fairness, equitable representation, and inclusivity for all in language education.
How does a DEI statement impact OFLA?
Once a DEI statement has been adopted, it influences every aspect of the association. It shapes the culture of the organization and pushes that diversity and inclusion are more than just buzzwords. This helps to create a sense of belonging, respect, and representation among members. By doing so, members will have more opportunities to exchange ideas and perspectives.
The DEI statement will also be key to guiding the decision-making process within OFLA. This helps to inform policies and initiatives and ensure that all activities are inclusive and equitable. It serves as a tool to evaluate whether opportunities are accessible to all members while making thoughtful and intentional choices about how to prioritize resources and promote a welcoming environment.
What is the process of selecting a DEI statement?
Members of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee have been working together to research what other language associations across the US are using and how they reflect their goals. This statement will serve as the foundation for future initiatives and decisions, helping us to work toward a learning space where every voice is heard and valued. The DEI statement will be revealed to the members following the board’s vote at the end of October!
Through the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion into our teaching and learning practices, we not only have strength between members but also the ability to contribute to a more just and understanding world.
