Lesley A. Chapman, Sycamore High School French Teacher, OFLA Beginning Teachers Committee Chair

Do you remember your first few years of teaching?  Do you remember the exhaustion, the insecurities, and trying to keep your head above water?  It’s safe to say that today’s beginning teachers have a lot more on their plates than I ever did when I began my career in the 90s.  Between RESA, OTES, SLOs, and keeping up with the state standards, beginning teachers have a lot of balls in the air. Fall, a Busy and Reflective Time

Debbie McCorkle, Unioto High School, OFLA Secondary Language Learning Committee

The fall is a busy time for the Secondary Language Learning Committee! During this season, members of the Committee will be field testing a Principals’ Evaluation tool. The Committee was tasked by past-president Teri Wiechart to create a tool that Ohio principals could use to evaluate Ohio World Language teachers. What should a World Language classroom look like? This question guided our design. Continue reading

Storytelling in FL Classroom: Toward More Use of a Powerful Tool

Gaby Semaan, University of Toledo/Assistant Professor, Director of Middle East Studies and Coordinator of Arabic Program, OFLA Teacher Education and Licensure

Storytelling is an old art that is common among all cultures and languages. The genres of stories are as varied as the stories themselves. Usually students of foreign languages grow up with familiar stories that are trans-lingual such as Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, etc. Continue reading

Focus on Using the Target Language in the World Language Classroom

ODE World Languages Team

Ryan Wertz, Kathy Shelton and Paula Sondej, World Language Consultants, Ohio Department of Education

A new school year in Ohio brings with it a renewed focus on fostering communicative proficiency and intercultural competence. The importance of using the target language almost exclusively with our world language students cannot be emphasized enough!  Language acquisition research clearly shows that we learn our second and third languages most efficiently in the same way we learned our first language – by being immersed in it. Jennifer Pike, Oak Hills High School

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 7.19.36 PM¡Hola a todos! I am so excited to join the AATSP team as Vice-President for the 2014-2016 term! I teach at Oak Hills High School, in a suburb of Cincinnati, and am gearing up for my 5th year in the classroom. Before I began teaching, I was actually in the design field (architecture and interior design), but knew that being a world language educator was my true calling (and surprisingly enough, I use my design training daily within my classroom instruction!). Besides teaching Spanish, I also volunteer as an ESL/EFL teacher in a variety of settings and spend part of my summers working at the University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. Continue reading
