OFLA TEACHER GRANT:

The OFLA Teacher Grant will be used for the following, as written by the recipient. “I am requesting an OFLA Grant in order to create bilingual biographical booklets of undocumented, Spanish-speaking immigrants in our community. The booklets will be the result of a collaboration between upper level Spanish and photography students, working with the immigrants. This project will also be the culmination of a year-long study of undocumented immigration from Latin America to the United States, as well as an effort to help build real-life connections between my students and others in our community they might not otherwise interact with. Following is a description of the year-long vision.
I am currently a candidate for the National Boards for Professional Teaching Standards. As part of this process, I am tasked with building real-life connections for my students with our community. To begin this process, last year I wrote a grant proposal from the National Education Association (NEA) for $5,000 to bring a Pulitzer Prize winning speaker, Sonia Nazario, to Sycamore High School. Our Spanish students read her book, La Travesía de Enrique ( Enrique’s Journey), which documents the true story of the odyssey of a boy from Honduras who rode on the tops of freight trains to reunite with his mother in the US. To help cover costs, I partnered with Miami University. The grant was awarded and Ms. Nazario spoke at our high school on September 22, 2016. It was a wonderful event for our students, as well as other area high schools that were invited to attend.
To deepen the impact of her presentation and immerse our students in this topic here in
Cincinnati, I will be pairing advanced Spanish students with advanced photography students (Ms. Nazario had a photographer with her when she herself rode on the trains, in order to help convey the story). I have made contacts with a local organization, Su Casa, where the students will be paired with undocumented immigrants from Latin America who are currently living in Cincinnati.”
