What a year, OWLA! It is hard to believe we are at the end of another school year. Now is the time of year where we, as teachers, try to cram everything in and make sure we cover everything that we did last year. Not only are we working in fast mode, but we are also battling field trips, spring events, awards ceremonies, and more.
While it is easy to get caught up in the fast paced rush to the end, it is important to highlight our students’ success throughout the year. Our students have made incredible growth, and it is important to recognize their hard work! Both students and teachers have worked hard to get to where we are at the end of the year.
So, how do you recognize student success? Maybe you pass out awards that you create specifically for your classroom. Awards can be a great surprise to your students or be something that your class votes on for each other. They can be for anything you choose—think about the values, activities, and wins you have had in your classroom.
Maybe awards aren’t your thing—there are plenty of ways to highlight your successes and wins in the classroom! I suggest a survey to ask students about their favorite memories from the year and then sharing the memories together. There are so many small things that happen throughout the year that we as teachers forget but that are very impactful for our students. It is a great way to end the year with positivity and joy in the classroom.
I also really enjoy passing back my students’ first assessment and last assessment to show them just how far they have come. This is such an important part of their proficiency journey—showing them the steps they have taken to strengthen their language skills. When students recognize the power behind their growth, they are encouraged to keep going!
Enjoy the end of the year and have a restful, relaxing summer!
