Empowering Teachers through Parent Support

Angela Gardner, Spanish Teacher, Ross High School

Introduction

Some years ago, when I began my journey as a classroom teacher, I dreamt of a classroom environment where my students would be engaged, respectful, and excited to learn. At the same time, I was terrified of soliciting support from parents, which I have now come to know as highly beneficial, even essential, to running a successful classroom. Today, I still get jitters from time to time when I have to contact a parent, especially to share unpleasant news, but for the most part, I have found that the risks are well worth the rewards. Here, I will share with OFLA members the methods and timing I use for parent contacts, the purpose of contacting parents, and more. I also hope that other teachers might find some use in having new ideas about engaging parents in their children’s language education process. Continue reading

OVFLA MEMBERSHIP GOES ONLINE

Mary Jane Kelley, Ohio University

The Ohio Valley Foreign Language Alliance held its annual fall meeting at Ohio University in Athens on Saturday, October 31, 2015. This year’s program featured a workshop on “Integrating Technology to Assess for Student Proficiency” lead by Bryan Drost, Director of Educational Services for Firelands Local Schools and Tech Integration Committee Chair for OFLA.  Drost guided the thirty participants through a series of mobile-apps and Web-2.0 tools that lend themselves to real-world learning in the language classroom.  Drost shared examples of activities he has created using these apps in order to teach and assess the eight themes of the Ohio Standards via Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs).  The three-hour hands-on workshop was lively and entertaining as Drost alternated between demonstration, participation, and small-group experimentation.  As always at our OVFLA meetings, participants had time to catch up, meet new members, and share ideas informally over coffee and other refreshments. Core Practice #6 of World Language Teaching

Lucas Hoffman, Sylvania Southview HS, OFLA President-elect

In October, 2015, I wrote an article as a follow-up from the LILL 2015 summer institute (organized by ACTFL, NCSSFL, and CSCTFL among other national and regional bodies).  I included information on the six core practices of world language teaching; you might think of these practices as those critical to really teaching languages for communication.

If you are looking for a strategy to help your students speak better, core practice #6 might be for you! Continue reading

An Example of Using TPR at the First Grade Level

Jonathan Harris, Spanish Teacher, Grades K-8, St. Gabriel Consolidated School, Cincinnati, OH

Executive Recorder and Editor for Print Publications, OFLA

In my first grade foreign language classroom, TPR (Total Physical Response) is used with the story, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This story was written by Bill Martin, Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, and of course the Spanish version is read in my class.  This story is popular and is usually read to toddlers but many of my students remember it.  It is used to review colors because the basic storyline is that a brown bear sees a yellow duck that sees a blue horse and so on.  According to the North Carolina Course of Study, TPR is “a teaching approach in which students respond with physical activity to increasingly complex teacher commands (www.ncpublicschools.org).” TPR is my preferred method of instruction for many years and is a very useful teaching aid. ‘It Takes a Village’

Diane Ceo-DiFrancesco, Xavier University, OFLA Teacher Preparation Committee Chair

We are currently facing two important issues with regards to world language teacher preparation. We have noticed a precipitous drop in the number of students in our world language teacher licensure programs across the state. This certainly raises concerns regarding the source of the next generation of language teachers. In addition, some non-native speaking students enrolled in world language teacher preparation programs struggle to reach the ACTFL proficiency levels required by the state of Ohio and need consistent communication practice opportunities in speaking and writing. Immersion Weekend 2015

The AATF-Ohio Immersion Weekend celebrated its 12th anniversary this past September. Approximately twenty teachers gathered in beautiful Mohican State Park for a wet end-of-summer weekend. Even though the weather wasn’t super, teachers and friends did have a good time chatting, watching francophone films, and playing and learning new French card games. We also enjoyed a nice potluck dinner thanks to the tasty francophone dishes all participants brought!

A special thank you to a few key people who really help pull off this fantastic weekend. Wendy Duffy kindly prepared three different soupe estivale all hungry participants arriving Friday evening. Karine Daddah, our secrétaire/trésorière handled all the logistics, shopping and communication leading up to the weekend. Merci beaucoup à vous deux!

Think about joining us next year for the 2016 Immersion Weekend. You can also get 10 contact hours. Dates and other information to be shared soon. Email our secretary-treasurer Karine Daddah to pre-register or if you have questions: karine.ould-daddah@wright.edu

Lights out

The first day at Camp OFLA 2015. Busy! Full of language, camp activity, and rain! Tuesday – rain! Wednesday – rain! Thursday – rain! Friday – rain! Saturday – rain! But that didn’t stop the outdoor language lessons, the swimming, hiking and campfires! In eleven years of Camp OFLA, this was the worst weather experience. But while camper and counselor surveys listed better weather, drier floors and Febreeze as their suggestions for Camp OFLA 2016, 100% of the first-time and returning campers enjoyed their camp experience. Most could not describe their least favorite activity for the week. Many listed “everything” as their favorite activity. The treasure hunt was a particular favorite where solving clues required the teamwork of all four languages! The treasure hunt was held this year on the last night when parents were invited to join in on the fun (and a couple of the parents thought the clues were too hard!).

Camp OFLA 2015 offered two levels of language learning – a Novice level and a Novice Mid for repeating campers or campers who had had either heritage language experience or the same language in an elementary school program or were returning campers. The Novice Mid campers were able to read a Carol Gaab book, Brandon Wants a Dog in either Spanish or in German. French, German, Japanese and Spanish classes all included Novice level campers. The daily schedule included two language class sessions – 1 ½ hours in the morning and 1 ½ in the afternoon. Each evening a different language group shares a game, craft, or presentation from their culture and then share the treat that their groups made earlier that day. Linzer cookies, homemade salsa, rice in a bag, and chocolate treats were rated high amongst the campers, H.S. counselors and teachers.

Look for new activities in 2016. Scholarships will be offered again. As more high schools encourage community service projects, H.S. language clubs have begun to sponsor their own scholarships. One of the H.S. German counselors gave up his stipend for the week and donated the money to the 2016 scholarship fund. Camp 2016 will offer two levels again in French, German, Japanese and Spanish. H.S. counselors will have a chance to apply earlier so that they can participate in training and more conversational practice before the June camp. Watch Camp OFLA 2016 on http://www.campofla.org and LIKE US on Facebook. Spread the word!

The more campers, the more CITs (counselors in training), the more H.S. counselors, and ultimately the more teachers involved in this fun and educational language and cultural experience! In the words of a first time Japanese camper “ Do Japanese again – if you don’t I will be very, very, very, very (16x) mad!
