Preparing for Presentational Speaking and Writing on the AP Language and Culture Exams

This year, the AP Language and Culture Exams in French, German, Italian and Spanish will not only require students to perform the same types of tasks in the free response sections, but the students in all four languages will also be evaluated using exactly the same rubric.  This has been the case for the past two years for French, German, and Italian. On August 12th, Kathy DiPofi Shelton joined the Ohio Department of Education as our state’s newest full time world language consultant. For the first time ever, the ODE Office of Curriculum and Assessment has a complement of two full-time consultants and one part-time consultant working on behalf of K-12 world language teachers and learners in Ohio. Ohio Association of Teachers of Japanese (OATJ)

Prof. Akiko Kawano Jones (BGSU) Received the AATJ Teacher of the Year Award

Prof. Akiko Kawano Jones of Bowling Green State University received the 2013 Teacher of the Year award from the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ).  She will be honored at the AATJ Luncheon during ACTFL convention in Florida on November 23.  Prof. Jones was the recipient of the 2008 Ed Allen Award for Outstanding College Foreign Language Instructor from OFLA.  She also received Consul General of Japan Award in 2009.  With the 2013 Teacher of the Year Award from AATJ, Prof. Jones’ contribution to the field of Japanese language education is recognized nationally.  The OATJ members are very proud and happy about this announcement.  This is a great news for foreign language education in Ohio.  Please join us in congratulating Prof. Jones!

The next TESOL Conference will be held in Columbus on November 15-16, 2013, at the downtown Hilton where our Central States Conference was held this year. The Conference title is Crossroads, Connections, Collaboration and will once again have a digital lab which has turned out to be very popular. Our keynote speaker will be Deborah Short, the author of SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol), a researched based protocol for teaching English Language Learners in the most effective way.

Founded in 2008, the Ohio Association of Teachers of Chinese (OATC) has been the major force for promoting Chinese language and culture and supporting Chinese teachers in Ohio.  With the growing popularity of Chinese study and the concomitant expansion of Chinese programs in the schools, OATC has witnessed a rapid growth in our membership.  This has allowed us to undertake diverse tasks to assist our members and to provide opportunities for them and their students.
