Save the date: Ohio AATG Fall Conference

It’s not too early to begin to make plans to attend the fall conference.  The program is still in the planning stages, but will include a meet and greet and a lesson sharing session on Friday.   There will also be a film in the evening.  Saturday will have a guest speaker in the morning, and an AATG webcast and business meeting in the afternoon.

The conference will be held Nov. 1-2, 2013 at the Hyatt Place, Columbus/Worthington, the same location as last year.  The hotel is located at 7490 Vantage Drive, Columbus, OH.  The phone number is +1 614-846-4355.  Rooms have been reserved at the reduced price of $99 for participants (mention “AATG Annual Fall Conference” when making reservations).

Look for additional information on the AATG Ohio Listserv as the date draws nearer.

National German Exam Ohio Results

This year we had 623 students take the exam.  Seventy-five of the students scored at or above the 90th percentile, and 152 students scored at or above the 80th percentile nationally. We are proud to have so many talented and dedicated German teachers and students in Ohio!  Darlene Lyon, the state exam coordinator announced this year’s top award winners:

Lauren Glass, a student at Centerville High School in Centerville, received one of the Summer Study Trip Abroad Awards to Germany.  Congratulations to both Lauren and her German teacher, Eric Bowersock!

Peter Wiegand of Copley High School in Copley received the Langenscheidt Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Study of German.  Congratulations to Peter and his teacher, David Edmonds.

All students who scored in the 90th percentile received an award from the state chapter, including books, book bags, bookmarks and posters from the AATG and its affiliates.

Goethe Institut and Ohio AATG Host Event at Central States Conference

German instructors who participated in the 2013 Central States Conference enjoyed a reception and were treated to a performance by Josefine Berkholz, a slam poet.  Everyone was captivated by her unique presentation style, as well as the topics she explored in her poetry.

Ms. Berkholz has appeared on German radio and television, and was named the Vizemeisterin der internationalen deutschsprachigen Poetry Slam Meisterschaften (Bereich u20) in 2010.
