Projects with Purpose

Bringing the Ethos of Service Learning into the Language Classroom

Chela Crinnion, Convent of the Sacred Heart (New York, NY)
spanishbananish@gmail.com

Rationale

As language teachers, we strive to introduce our students to a bigger world, beyond their linguistic and cultural comfort zone.  Far too few of our students have the opportunity to travel abroad, yet we do not simply relegate the benefits of cross-cultural ventures to a select few.  Instead, we bring the essence of that experience into the classroom in any way we can.  In short, when we cannot take our students to other countries, we bring key elements of cultures into our classroom: the sights, the sounds, and the scenarios. Membership

Dear Foreign Language Colleague,

Well we’ve done it again! We’ve organized our classrooms, gone through files for the beginning week, arranged our own desks, tried to look ahead and get everything done that we have no time for once that first bell rings. Early Language Learning

My Wish for You

Judy McCombs, Early Language Learning Committee Chair

I’ve put away my summer tote. In it I have suntan lotion, the pool pass, lip balm, an extra ponytail grip, and the “free refills all summer” cup that was too expensive in the first place!  I had a good summer. My kids were back. I got to visit my family in San Antonio. I found a long lost friend. Continue reading

It Takes a Village: A Team Approach to Developing Teacher Candidates’ Language Proficiency

Martha Castañeda

The Ohio New Standards for K-12 World Languages (2012) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) Standards for Foreign Language Learning (SFLL) in the 21st Century (2006) stress the importance of using the target language in the foreign language classroom.  It is only when we provide instruction in the target language, that we model “how, when, and why to say what to whom” (SFLL, 2006).
